Does your child have the same cold-like symptoms, lasting for weeks, around the same time each year? It may be worth looking into if they are experiencing seasonal allergies. Common symptoms may include a stuffy or runny nose, an itchy throat and/or eyes, sneezing, difficulty breathing, an upset stomach, and or the development of rashes.
Common allergies and allergens
Many children experience allergies such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever), nasal congestion, ear infections, and food allergies. The culprit behind allergies are allergens, which can be found everywhere. Common outdoor allergens are tree pollen, plant pollen, and insect bites/stings. Indoor allergens include pet hair/fur, dust mites, and mold. In addition, irritants such as cigarette smoke, perfume, and car exhaust can aggravate allergies. Many of us are also familiar with common food allergens such as peanuts, eggs, and dairy products.
Some people are allergic to specific materials, such as latex. At Eco Pea Co. we are mindful of the ingredients that go into our products to ensure they are safe for sensitive skin.
What you can do
It’s hard seeing our children suffer, but remember, you are already helping more than you may think. Continue regular household cleaning, such as washing linens regularly and keeping dust mites at bay. Be sure to let other caregivers (including schools and daycares) know about your child’s allergies as well as how to alleviate the discomfort.
See your doctor
Visit your family doctor so that other health issues can be ruled out and to receive a referral to an allergies specialist. Have some questions for your doctor prepared before your visit.
Allergies are common, but even knowing this, we may worry for our children. So be sure to be patient with yourself as you navigate these new circumstances.
